The country of temples , the name in itself suggests the number of temples and religious places in the country. With a vast history and belief on gods our ancestors built alot of temples in the different parts of our country. So here's the list of top 10 Religious Places in Nepal :
10) Mukthinath : This temple is the sacred place for both Hindu's and Buddhist. Muktinath is a place of salvation for Hindu's where as Buddhist consider this place as the place of hundred 100 waters. Located in the Muktinath Valley at an altitude of 3710 meters above the sea level. This temple covers one of the famous trekking route "The Annapurna Circuit". Locals believe that a visit to the Muktinath temple will help you to achieve your goal. There are 108 waterspots in the backyard of the temple known as "Mukhdhara". Taking a bath in these 108 waterspouts is believed to bring salvation.
9) Gosaikunda : Gosaikunda is one of the most famous religious and pilgrimage site of Nepal. It is located at an altitude of 4,380 meters. Every year in Janaipurnima, thousands of Hindu pilgrims come to worship God Shiva, whereas Buddhist visit this place in the Full Moon day. In Hindu mythology it is an abode of Lord Shiva and Gauri created by his "Trishul" to quench his thirst after he drank a poison. And it also has a strong belief that after taking a bath in this holy lake all your sins, sorrows, and pains are washed away.
8) Janaki Mandir : Janaki Mandir is a hindu temple specially dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sita. It is located in Janakpur in Mithila region of Nepal. This temple is popularly known as the "Nau lakha Mandir" which means about Nine Hundred Thousand Rupees was spent to construct this Temple. It is a three storied temple made up entirely with stones and marbles. All of the sixty rooms inside is decorated with the flags of Nepal, coloured glasses, engravings, and paintings with beautiful lattice windows and turrets. Every year thousands of pilgrims from India, Srilanka, and many more countries visit this temple to worship Ram and Sita.
6) Soyambhunath : Soyambhunath is an ancient religious architecture at the top of a hill in the captial of the country Kathmandu valley. The entire structure of the stupa is deeply symbolic. White dome represents the Earth while the 13 hered tower like structure symbolises the 13 stages of "nirvana". The nose like structure below the eyes represent the Nepali number 1 signifying that there is on 1 path to enlightenment. The third eye represents the wisdom of looking within.
5) Dakshinkali : Dakshinkali Mai is the most powerful god in our mythology. And Dakshinkali is the main temple dedicated to The Goddess Kali, which is the alter incarnation of Goddess Parvati. It is located in the southwest part of Kathmandu. This place is also known for mass Animal sacrifices. mostly devotees gather on the occasion of Dashain festival which is also the biggest festival of Hindu people. It is believed that if we pay a visit to the goddess and pray and offer a sacrificial animal all of our enemies are belied to demise and we will be victorious on our works.
4) Manakamana : Manakama is believed to be the sacred place of the goddess Bhagwati, who is also an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. It is located in the "Gorkha" district. Manakama is maily derived of two words "Mana" which states heart and "kamana" which means wish. People have faith that their wishes will be fulfilled after a visit to this religious shrine. This temple was built by Lakhan Thapa and is the only temple to have a priest from "Magar" community.
3) Lumbini : Lumbini is the sacred birth place of Gautam Buddha . Lumbini has been designated by UNESCO as the world heritage site in 1997 AD. Some of the more impoetant site in Lumbini include Ashoka pillar, Mayadevi Temple which was the birth place of Lord Buddha . The inscrtiption on the Ashoka pillar also refers spot as his birthplace where Lord Buddha took his first seven steps after his birth and gave peace message and a sign of humanity all over Asia. People from any religion can visit this place to get a Mental state of peace and happiness.
2) Boudhanath : Boudhanath is the largest stupa of Nepal and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet. The form and the alternated squares and circles represent the three dimensional mandala, which is comprised of abstract religious concepts. The base of the stupa consists of 2 large platforms, these platform symbolises the Earth. The two circular plinths supporting hemisphere is stupa symbolises water. It is finally topped with a square tower bearing a couple Buddha eyes on the for sides.
1) Pashupatinath : Pashupatinath is the most sacred Hindu temple located on the bank of the Bagmati river. The temple is dedicated to God Shiva. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the main temple as people following other religion are prohibited to enter the premises of the main temple. Inside the temple which has four faces of lord Shiva and the fifth one is said to be invisible and is believed to be on the top of those 4 heads. The two storied roof is made of copper and is covered with gold whereas the doors are covered with silver. The western door has a large statue known to us as Nandi which is also covered with gold.
